Some homes quietly accept retirement.
Others politely suggest they’re ready for a fresh coat of paint and a new kitchen.
Then there are homes like Zora.
Built in the 1940s as a modest 78m² Queenslander, this little house wasn’t interested in fading into the background. It simply needed someone willing to see what it could become.
That someone was Ryer Projects.
Rather than replacing the home’s character, the Brisbane luxury builder chose to work with it. The original home was carefully raised and built under, expanding into a generous 480m² family residence while preserving the warmth and familiarity that made it worth saving in the first place.
The result isn’t a house trying to be new.
It’s an old soul that’s learnt a few new tricks.
It’s easy to associate luxury with oversized spaces, expensive finishes or grand gestures. But walking through Zora, it becomes clear that luxury isn’t really about any of those things.
It’s about how a home feels.
Natural light drifts through open living spaces. Timber introduces warmth. Soft textures invite you to relax. Every room feels connected, yet each has its own quiet purpose. The line between indoors and outdoors almost disappears, creating a home that feels calm rather than complicated.
Every design decision – from the overall vision through to the smallest interior detail – was conceived in-house by the Ryer Projects team and reflects their approach to luxury living.
Natural stone appears throughout Zora, but never competes for attention.
Instead, it becomes part of the home’s rhythm, adding warmth, texture and permanence without demanding the spotlight.
Three Finestone materials were selected, each with its own role to play.
The kitchen is undoubtedly the heart of Zora, and it’s here that Cosmo Leather Quartzite takes centre stage.
Flowing across the island, benchtops, splashback, bar, laundry, outdoor BBQ and even the custom television unit, the stone quietly ties the living space together. Rather than feeling repetitive, each application reveals something slightly different, allowing the natural movement of the stone to unfold from room to room.
The stone almost changes with the natural light throughout the day. It’s warm neutral base is layered with subtle copper undertones that complement the brushed copper tapware and hardware, while sitting beautifully alongside the rich timber cabinetry that anchors the kitchen. Together, the materials create a palette that feels warm, tactile and inviting.
The leathered finish brings another dimension again. Soft to the touch and full of character, it encourages interaction rather than simply admiration.
And just quietly . . . the butler’s pantry!
Calling it a pantry feels like underselling it. It’s the kind of space that makes you quietly reconsider every pantry you’ve ever owned. Let’s just say… we weren’t in any hurry to leave!
Bathrooms often become places of retreat, and Taj Mahal Quartzite feels perfectly suited to that role.
Selected for the master ensuite, main bathroom and upstairs ensuite, its gentle veining and warm palette create spaces that feel restful without ever feeling plain.
Some stones follow trends.
Taj Mahal simply continues being Taj Mahal.
There’s a reason designers keep coming back to it.
Then there’s the powder room.
If the rest of the home speaks softly, Breccia Pastello is the guest who arrives wearing excellent shoes.
Rich in movement and personality, it transforms what could have been a simple functional space into one of the home’s most memorable moments.
Rather than overwhelming the room, its expressive pattern creates intimacy, depth and just enough drama to make visitors pause before asking,
“Hang on… what stone is this?”
One of the most impressive aspects of Zora is its restraint.
There isn’t a single finish chosen simply because it’s fashionable.
Everything feels deliberate.
The design is inspired by an earthy, organic palette of stone, timber and natural textures creating a home that feels grounded today and likely still will twenty years from now.
