When it comes to creating homes that feel both contemporary and timeless, Ethos Interiors has mastered the art of balance. Their recent project, Berkley House, is a striking example of how thoughtful design and carefully chosen materials can bring old and new together in harmony.

A HERITAGE QUEENSLANDER, REIMAGINED

Berkley House is a renovation and extension of an existing heritage Queenslander. The challenge was twofold: respect the home’s original character while creating a new space that feels clean, modern, and functional for family life.

The result is a minimalist, pared-back design with strong lines, natural textures, and a restrained palette of greys and neutrals. Ethos Interiors placed equal weight on functionality and atmosphere – every element is purposeful, every detail calm and considered. With young children in mind, the design cleverly hides everyday clutter, creating spaces that feel serene without losing its practicality.

THE KITCHEN: A FOCAL POINT IN STONE

At the heart of the home lies the open-plan kitchen, designed to be both the centre of family life and a visual statement. Ethos Interiors chose Smokey Pearl Granite in a leathered finish from Finestone as the hero material for the kitchen island, benchtops, and splashback.

The clients personally selected the slabs after viewing them in person, drawn to the stone’s understated depth and unique texture. The leathered finish reveals the natural variation of the granite, catching the light beautifully from different angles and adding life to the space without overwhelming it.

As the kitchen is open to the dining area, the island needed to hold its own as a focal point. Smokey Pearl Granite achieves just that, bringing quiet drama, refinement, and durability to a highly functional space. For a busy young family, the material’s practicality was just as important as its aesthetics: low-maintenance, easy to clean, and timeless in style.

BEYOND THE KITCHEN

The same stone was also carried into the ensuite, ensuring continuity and reinforcing the home’s design philosophy of restraint and balance. By using a consistent material palette, Ethos Interiors has created a seamless flow from room to room, with the natural stone adding moments of strength and sophistication throughout.
